VIKING CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES                      5/21/02

This section is woefully inadequate and hopefully will be expanded soon.  For now, contact the Vinland Vikings or the Ostvik Vikings for better details, or try the links below.

Some Norse tunics had very tight cuffs--sewing a husband's sleeves shut each morning was a wifely duty!  There is good evidence for the use of a linen shirt or under-tunic, possibly much shorter than the tunic.

Trousers were worn, generally of wool.  Some were close-fitting and footed, others may have been more straight-legged, ending at the ankle.

Shoes tended to have round toes, but were otherwise quite similar to those found elsewhere.

Scandinavian women were believed to have worn an "apron dress" with shoulder straps, called a "hangerock", and it may have existed both in a two-panel style and a wrap-around.  The evidence for pleated underdresses is very sketchy and limited in time-span.
