Mortals and Hunters:
Living on the Edge

The Mortal’s venue, also called the "Hunter’s" venue, is a game of living on the edge of the World of Darkness. Mortals do not have the advantage of Vampiric disciplines or networks of influence, nor the Werewolves’ gifts and ancient Spirit allies.

Birmingham Player Background

Central Alabama Skeptics’ Circle

You and your fellows are part of a loose organization of skeptics and occultists who meet monthly to discuss the supernatural and the paranormal. You call yourself the Central Alabama Skeptics’ Circle, though many of you are not skeptics at all. Several of your fellow "skeptics" claim to be mediums who can speak to the dead, and at least one fellow claims that vampires are real. Why are you here? Are you a debunker, or a paranormal investigator? Are you interested in making a fast buck through the occult or obsessed with protecting mankind from the monsters who prey on it?

Player Cohesiveness and the Lone Wolf

Make sure that your character has a reason to "hang with the others." If your character is a convinced "ain’t no supernatural thangs" kind of guy or girl, why is she around? If your concept is just too detrimental to the experience of other players in this venue, the STs will work with you on developing a character that integrates more smoothly into the local chronicle.
The Wasteland
Madame Sosostris, famous clairvoyante,
Has a bad cold, nevertheless
Is known to be the wisest woman in Europe,
With a wicked pack of cards. Here, said she,
Is your card, the drowned Phoenician Sailor.
(Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!)
Here is Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks,
The lady of situations.
Here is the man with three staves, and here the Wheel,
And here is the one-eyed merchant, and this card,
Which is blank, is something that he carries on his back,
Which I am forbidden to see. I do not find
The Hanged Man. Fear death by water.
I see crowds of people, walking round in a ring.
Thank you. If you see dear Mrs. Equitone,
Tell her I bring the horoscope myself;
One must be so careful these days.
(T.S. Eliot, "The Wasteland")

Local Authorities in the World of Darkness

Birmingham

Mayor’s Office
City Hall - 710 20th N., Birmingham, AL 35203. Despite his city’s dark problems, the new mayor of Birmingham seems above reproach, with a strong interest in "fiscal responsibility." This is his public appearance.

City Council
9 Councilors meet regularly to plan Birmingham’s future.

Police Department
Central Headquarters - 710 20th N., Birmingham, AL 35203. In addition to a city jail and K-9 patrol unit, Birmingham has the following police precincts:

Streets and Sanitation Department
501 6th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35205. The Streets and Sanitation Department knows far too much of Birmingham both above and below the streets.

Homewood

Mayor’s Offices
1903 29th Ave S., Homewood, AL 35209 Homewood’s mayor governs a small bedroom community athwart Birmingham’s sprawl and the money of Hoover’s wealthy residents.

Police Department
1903 29th Ave S., Homewood, AL 35209 Homewood’s Police Department faces barriers on all sides. Jurisdiction problems keep these mostly honest law enforcement officers from pursuing matters into the city of Birmingham or the wealthy suburbs of Hoover, despite the frequent problems and crime that come from both neighboring cities.

Hoover

Mayor’s Offices
100 Municipal Drive, Hoover, AL 35216 Hoover’s Mayor has money -- as do the wealthy residents who buy his opinions and thoughts. Some say that he is just a pawn, while others hint at much worse.

Police Departments
100 Municipal Drive, Hoover, AL 35216 Individual members of Hoover’s Police Department seem redeemable -- but the department itself seems to be bought and paid for. Hoover police would much rather keep the peace and quiet of their neighborhood than pursue crime, and often persecute poor street people rather than rich drug dealers, white collar criminals, or well-to-do murderers.

Vestavia Hills

Mayor’s Offices
513 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216 Like Homewood, Vestavia Hills sits between Birmingham and Hoover. Unlike Homewood, the rot has come home to dwell. With its white-washed exterior, Homewood seems like an upscale, well-to-do middle class community. Deep in its streets, though, ancient, dark cults hold sway amidst suburbia, while aspiring junior executives slake unspeakable thirsts.

Police Departments
Vestavia Hill’s Police Department would seem to be as corrupt as Hoover, if they were only effective. Instead, they lie low. Fortunately, so do most of the white collar criminals.
