OUT OF PLAY SECTION

RACIAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Sarr Description:

Large, catlike individuals who share many similarities with the large hunting cats including mating habits, effects of catnip and other members of the mint family, litters of young, etc.

Makeup:

Must appear as one of the large hunting cats with the exception of a totally black cat.

Advantages:

Can buy resist disease, can detect presence of poison or disease if sniffing for one minute.

Disadvantages:

May only buy edged weapons skills.

NOTE: a recent change is the ability for the sarr to now use missile weapons such as spear. If you wish to use anything like a bow or crossbow please clear this with the sarr marshalls who will take it to the proper people to clear it. Also you will need to have it in your character history why you would be using this weapon. Thank you.

WARNING

If you are a starting character and are wanting to play a sarr you need to know a few things first.:

1.) Sarrs require makeup-a LOT of makeup-and if you are a person who does not like to wear makeup then you don't want to play a Sarr. Also if you are allergic to any dyes most makeups contain dyes of one kind or another.

2.) The costuming can become hot as there is fur involved. You also need to realize that a Sarr must have a tail and in some cases of Sarr they must have ears. So you are going to be dealing with spirit gum also in some cases.

I nor anyone else is trying to discourage you from playing a Sarr just letting you know the pains involved. If you still want to play one, then find a Sarr marshal (you probably already know one if you are reading this) and let them know that, yes you want to play a Sarr. They will then, most likely laugh evilly (they have gone through this already), and steer you in the right direction.

The first thing to do is decide which clan of Sarr you want to play. If you need help deciding a couple of good ideas to keep in mind are the patterns on the Sarr, the less patterning means less makeup. And also go to the library or talk to another Sarr already in play to see which cat you like best.

The second thing you are going to need is makeup, which can be purchased at a number of stores in various forms. My favorite is Mehron in the tube which washes off with soap and water. There are others though.

BEN NYE-Comes in several forms and styles and a wide range of colors. May require makeup remover to get it off

MEHRON-Also several forms and styles. Some wash off with soap and water while other require makeup remover.

NOTE!!!-If you sweat a lot, anything that comes off with soap and water Will also dribble off. this can make a mess of your costume.

In dealing with your costume and makeup if you do not want to deal with makeup from the top of your head to your feet my best suggestion is to buy a body suit and apply paint and fur to it to make you look like the cat you are portraying.

Sarr also have fangs upper and lower, although not required they greatly enhance the costuming effect. These can be purchased at some of the conventions for $30 or you can take friendly plastic and make a really decent pair that way. Also if you really want to go this far you can get a prosthetic nose piece at the same stores you get the makeup at.

The following is a listing of stores around the Atlanta area which carry theatrical makeup and supplies. They are up to date as far as I know. If you find a discrepancy or new sources for costuming and/or makeup please email me.

COSTUMING

In costuming as a Sarr you are probably going to want to get a body suit and hand paint it in the pattern of the Sarr you are portraying.

Most of the large cats have long tails. These include the lion, leopard, puma, jaguar, caracal, serval, margay, golden cat, tiger, and ocelot. The tails for these should at least go from the small of your back to the ground.

Cheetahs and leopards have slightly longer tails with snow leopards having the longest tails of the big cats, and bobcat/lynx have nubies or tails about a foot long. If you want the tail to stand up and not just hang there putting wire in it is a good idea. Some of the cats have ears larger than normal (caracal and serval) and will require some elf ears and fur. And some of the cats have ruffs, i.e. tigers.

In costuming for the time period you want to look at clothing and styles from Arabia, Persia, and Egypt. A cross of all three, straight from one, it is up to you.

You might want to go to the library and get a book on big cats and one on Arabian costumes/culture. Check out Thief of Baghdad(movie) wonderful costumes and correct time period. And if you cannot find something at a thrift store or goodwill then ask someone in play or talk to a race marshal. We will point you to someone who can help you.

For putting makeup on, again talk to a race marshal. We will point you to someone who can show you how to put the makeup on with the least amount of pain. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure you bring the following- soap, makeup remover, astringent (Sea Breeze), cotton balls (for putting the Sea Breeze@ on), lotion, a wash cloth you aren't afraid of getting dirty, and towels. The list of what to bring out of the players handbook is a good one to follow. Also as a side note baby wipes are great for getting off the makeup as well and are fairly inexpensive at Walmart.

As far as role playing goes once you get into play stay in play, talk about in play subjects, and try to dress and act the character. You are a cat, a large cat, but nonetheless a cat. Think like a cat act like one but also remember you have evolved somewhat. My suggestion here is to get a book on cats and one on medieval times and study both. Talk to other people in play who are Sarr and get them to help you.

Also, as stated before Sarr become intoxicated by mints, ioleplaying this is great fun and you can do this with any member of the mint family.
