The
Goblins are travellers from another Plane, who came to the Island shortly
after the first of the Shipwrecked arrived - but, unlike the Shipwrecked,
they seem to have the means to come and go at will.
For the most part, the Goblins are mischievous, troublesome creatures, whose pranks can be as harmful as they can be amusing. The younger Goblins seem overly unwise, and certainly look at the world in a much different way than any of the Shipwrecked do.
Yet,
for all the troubles the Goblins may cause, they have also proven to be invaluable
allies to the Shipwrecked, providing them with information they could not
obtain in any other fashion, and the chance of learning of their enemies in
combat before having to face them on the actual field of battle. Yet certainly
the Goblin Games - of any kind - often prove to be a two-edged sword, and
the stories of the Goblins all contain a lie hidden within the truth.
Bartleby,
one of the more 'reasonable' of the Goblins and well-liked by many in the
Stoackade, has aided the Shipwrecked often in the past by acting as a Channel
through which other beings are summoned to tell the stories that the Shipwrecked
have requested told. He has also been a source of information, and acted at
times as an intermediary between the Goblin Court and the Shipwrecked. Which
is why it was all the more terrible to learn that Bartleby was responsible
for the death of the Goblin King, and the events surrounding that occurrence.
The Shipwrecked managed to earn the alliance of the Goblins, and have attended gatherings in the Goblins' own realm. Most recently, the Shipwrecked secured that relationship with the marriage of two of their own - Kaslia and Aelycan - to the Goblin King and his daughter, the Princess Hermione (respectively).
Many
of the Shipwrecked also allied themselves with one of the Noble Estates of
the Goblin Court, receiving boons in return for aiding
that house. Whereas the younger goblins seem little more than pranksters,
the Goblin Court moves in its own circles of intrigue. And, as the Shipwrecked
discovered to their surprise, the Realm of the Goblin King consists of many
strange and unusual creatures, denizens the likes
of which some of them have never seen. The Goblin King and his daughter are,
in fact, Elves - related somehow to the Feydakin, and bearing marks of both
Light and Dark.
The
Goblin King has proven to be a powerful ally and has provided information,
aid, and the ability to remove Curses to the Shipwrecked. He had been slain
by the Yama (as a result of a trap
laid for him and others by Bartlbeby) and his spirit Inflicted by the accursed,
condemning the pieces of his soul to the void between worlds. The Shipwrecked
recently journeyed to this Shadowed Place to restore the Goblin King, though
they did so with the aid of a potion given to them by Bartleby. The Goblin
King has returned to life, but whether there are any ill side-effects has
yet to be determined.
